Sicklerville, NJ (July 11, 2015) – On Bridgeport Speedway’s quarter mile track, Jimmy Horton won the fourth race of the Modified 811 Dig Safely Series.
At the start of the 25-lap feature, pole sitter Corey Andersen took the lead with Johnny Cornell, Rick Holsten, Jimmy Horton and Bob Sarkisian in pursuit. By the fourth circuit, Horton had advanced into second place. After a caution period on the fifth lap, Horton wrestled the top running spot away from Andersen. As Horton was setting a fast pace, Andersen and Mike Iles were starting an entertaining multi-lap duel for second place on the eighth lap. By the eleventh circuit, Iles overtook Andersen and began to set his sights on Horton. With ten tours remaining, Horton was on top with Iles in second, Andersen and Lou Cicconi in close quarters for third and Cornell in fifth. On the twentieth lap, Richie Pratt motored by Cornell to take over fifth. With Horton still in command, Pratt’s late race charge continued as he passed Cicconi with one circuit to go. On the final lap, Horton’s advantage over Iles diminished but the driver from Neshanic Station, NJ held on for the victory. Horton’s win in Rocco Infante’s No. JR1 was his one hundred twenty-eighth Modified triumph at Bridgeport Speedway and his first on the track’s inner oval. The triumph for the fifty-nine year old Horton also marked the forty-second consecutive season (1974-2015) in in which he has won at least one Modified feature race. In victory lane, Horton spoke about how his opinion on Modifieds competing on Bridgeport Speedway’s inner oval has changed. “I was always against the quarter mile as I thought it was too small but it is good little track to race on,” quipped the victor.
With Iles crossing the line in second, Andersen’s strong run resulted in a third place finish. Pratt completed the event in fourth with Cicconi coming home in fifth. For finishing in fifth, Cicconi received a free racing wheel from Vahlco Racing Wheels. Rick Holsten was awarded the Hard Luck Award from S&D Bodyline. The heat races were won by Cornell and Horton.
With the win, Horton’s lead in the Modified 811 Dig Safely Series has increased to sixteen points over Johnny Cornell (216-200). Ron Roberts is in third place with 196 points. The final contest in the five-race series is set for Friday, July 31. The champion of the Modified 811 Dig Safely Series will be awarded a minimum of $1,000 and a guaranteed starting spot in the $10,000 to win Romp in the Swamp Call Before You Dig Championship race on Saturday, September 26.
