April 6 No Wing Spring Fling Kicks Off Lanco’s 62nd Season At Clyde Martin Memorial Speedway

Newmanstown, PA (February 24) – Plans and preparations are “full steam ahead” for the April 6 No Wing Spring Fling at Lanco’s Clyde Martin Memorial Speedway in Newmanstown, PA. The non-point season opener kicks off the 62nd season of competition under the Lanco club’s banner, and it will give racers a rare chance to race without wings on the lightning-quick, progressively banked oval.

The No Wing Spring Fling will feature qualifying heats, consolation races, and A-Mains for wingless 600 and wingless 270 Micro Sprints, along with the second-ever 125cc/250cc Four-Stroke Non-Wing Challenge. Gates will open at 3:30 p.m. on April 6, with a mandatory driver’s meeting at 5:00. Warm-ups will commence at 5:30, and the heat races will go green at 6 p.m.

A 25-car field in the 600 and 270 classes will result in a winner’s paycheck of $500, HOWEVER…that amount increases if there are additional entries until the magic number hits 40 or more, in which case the winner goes home with $1,000. Thirty or more entries also guarantees a $100 payday just to take the green in the 600 or 270 A-Main. This is an “open event”, meaning no membership requirements or car inspections are needed in order to compete on April 6. There will be a $50 car entry for 600 and 270 competitors, along with a pit pass fee of $30. Any Lanco members who take part in pre-season practice earlier that day will receive a $10 discount on their car entry for the No Wing Spring Fling.

The racers who enter the 125/4-Stroke Challenge will not have to pay a car entry fee as long as they are Lanco members. Any non-members who participate in this special Challenge event will be charged a $5.00 entry fee. The payout schedule for the 125/4-Strokes is also posted on the event page at clydemartinspeedway.com.

The first No Wing Spring Fling was presented in 2016, with Jack Conover claiming the wingless 600 victory. The ARDC Midgets accompanied the 600’s in the inaugural event, and Alex Bright rode home the winner in the Midget main.

In 2017, it was Tim Buckwalter enjoying the spoils of victory in the second No Wing Spring Fling for the 600cc Micros, while Mike Rutherford sped to victory in the 270cc feature. Alex Bright once again copped the ARDC Midget headliner.

Last season, a nasty forecast of snow and bitter cold forced officials to call off the event a few days prior to its scheduled running. While the snow did not materialize, the brutal cold the swept in for the first weekend in April certainly justified the decision to cancel the show. Fingers and toes are crossed for this year’s No Wing Spring Fling, in the hope that Mother Nature will provide weather suitable for early season clay-hurling action.

On Labor Day weekend, 2018, the very first 125cc/250cc Four-Stroke Challenge was presented and Cliff Brian Jr. did the Four-Strokes proud as he survived a thrilling duel with 125cc ace Kyler Heiney in a very competitive and entertaining event.

Practice for Lanco’s five weekly divisions (winged 600’s, 270’s, 125’s, Sportsman, and 250cc Four-Strokes) will take place earlier in the day on Saturday, April 6. Lanco members whose cars have passed the pre-season inspection process will be eligible to practice from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The pre-season inspection will be held, at the track, on March 30 and 31 from 9a.m. to 1 p.m.

Point racing begins with the regular season opener on Saturday, April 13, on First Responders Night at the Clyde.
