AFTON, NY – It’s almost showtime!

On Wednesday (July 22), the richest race in the Southern Tier takes place at I-88 Speedway on the Afton, N.Y., Fairgrounds. More than $30,000 cash will be on the line for the touring Short Track Super Series (STSS) Fueled By Hi-Tek big-block/small-block Modifieds, including a season-high $8,888 to the winner (with $20 “Gambler’s Fee” posted via the Halmar International bonus program) for the third edition of the ‘Crazy 8s Special’ program.

The ‘Crazy 8s’ serves as race No. 5 of the STSS Bob Hilbert Sportswear North Region $15,000 championship battle. Stewart Friesen of Sprakers, N.Y., holds a slim 11-point lead over Danny Johnson entering the I-88 event.

Gates open at 4 p.m. A “Fan Fest” on the horse track takes place from 5-5:45 p.m. Hot laps hit the track at 6:15 p.m. with racing at 7 p.m.

Adult grandstand admission is $20 (ages 15 and over). Students (ages 9-14) pay $10. Kids 8 and under are FREE. Pit admission is $35, with no license required.

A talented field of invaders is expected tackle the ‘Crazy 8s’ event, including Friesen, Johnson, Anthony Perrego, Alan Johnson, Gary Tomkins, Tommy Meier (in a new Jeff Behrent-owned No. 3), Billy Van Pelt, Erick Rudolph, Randy Chrysler, Mike and Rich Ricci, Jeff Strunk, Doug Manmiller, Mike Gular, Jackie Brown Jr., Jeff Heotzler, a returning Tyler Dippel, Rick Laubach, Jerry Higbie Jr., Ryan Jordan and many more.

Both past ‘Crazy 8s’ winners – Danny Creeden (2014) and Mike Mahaney (2013) – will be in the field. Mahaney is on a streak of three straight victories in weekly competition at I-88. Creeden pocketed more than $10,000 cash in a STSS South Region win at New Egypt (N.J.) Speedway in June.

Last October’s Short Track SuperNationals winner Shaun Walker will look toward another high-profile triumph at the track closest to his Masonville, N.Y., home with the ‘Crazy 8s Special’ event.

Among the tough I-88 regulars looking to defend their Friday turf include veteran Mitch Gibbs, defending STSS champion Andy Bachetti, Brett Tonkin, Rusty Smith and more.

The complete STSS Modified race payout has been posted on the series website: http://bdmotorsportsmedia.com/crazy8s-modified-pay-structure/

In addition to the huge pay structure, more than $1,100 in lap money has been collected for the 48-lap feature. Lap money will be distributed to the top-eight running order during the main. Lap sponsors are listed online at:http://bdmotorsportsmedia.com/crazy-8s-special-lap-sponsors/

Special awards and bonuses have been lined up for competitors. A complete list can be found at the following link:http://bdmotorsportsmedia.com/crazy-8s-special-awards-bonuses/

Thanks to Olum’s, furniture, bedding, appliance and electronics centers with locations in the Southern Tier and Syracuse, one lucky race fan will leave with a brand-new Whirlpool front-loading washer and dryer, with a total MSRP value of more than $2,599 thanks to a recent upgrade.

There is no cost to be part of this raffle. A drawing of general admission tickets will take place following the Modified 48-lap feature in Victory Lane. The washer/dryer will be on-site and able to be taken home by the lucky winner.

Joining the Modifieds on the program are the GRIT Series Crate 602 Sportsman in a $1,000-to-win main and Doug Borger’s traveling XCel 600 Modifieds competing in a mini-series race also paying $1,000 to the victor.
