011416SKSOMERTON, AZ- January 14, 2016- The focus for Steve Kinser throughout the 2nd annual Winter Heat Sprint Car Showdown was to use the marquee event featuring five races in nine days at Cocopah Speedway for a little research and development.

“We definitely wanted to win provided the opportunity, but our biggest objective was to figure out some things for this team when Kraig returns to the United States and begins the 2016 season next month,” he said. “Our results weren’t what we were aiming for, but the objective was met.”

Kinser, who was piloting the Arctic Cat No. 11 for Steve Kinser Racing, kicked off the second week of the Winter Heat Sprint Car Showdown by maneuvering from third to win a heat race last Wednesday. Unfortunately, rain plagued the area throughout the week and during racing that night, which created a narrow track.

Kinser finished where he started – sixth – in a qualifier and after battling for a top 10 throughout the main event, he posted a 13th-place finish.

“Track position was key,” he said. “Everyone with the Winter Heat Sprint Car Showdown did their best under the circumstances, but the track wasn’t conducive to allow us to charge through the field.”

The team returned to the 3/8-mile oval on Friday and was met with a tough blow as a mechanical problem developed while Kinser was pushed off to start third in a heat race. He was unable to start the race and was forced to tag the back of the field during a qualifier and B Main.

“That’s tough to overcome when passing points are so crucial,” he said. “By not starting the heat race we were buried for the remainder of the night and the hole was too deep to get out of.”

The event ended with similar misfortune on Saturday. Kinser placed sixth in a heat race, which put him on the pole of a qualifier. However, a mechanical problem kept the team from taking the green flag again and ended the weekend early.

“Although it’s frustrating that’s part of racing,” he said. “I’m glad we got some things figured out and some problems solved this early in the year. Hopefully everything is aligned well when Kraig gets back in the car soon.

“I want to thank everyone at Arctic Cat for their support in helping us head out to the Winter Heat Sprint Car Showdown. We had a great time and look forward to going back in the future.”
