(Bowman Gray Stadium, Winston-Salem, NC) Burt Myers added another win to
his 2019 total on Saturday at Bowman Gray Stadium, while Lee Jeffreys
claimed his first win of the season.
But the talk around the water cooler for the next few days won’t be
about the wins – it will be about the wreck fest between Jonathan Brown
and Jason Myers that took place during the second Modified race.
Before the carnage – back at the beginning of the night – Lee Jeffreys
of Wallburg was the fastest qualifier and started on the pole, with
Brandon Ward of Winston-Salem starting beside him. As the two powered
into turn one during the opening lap, neither wanted to let up. They
rode far into the corner, nearly colliding with the guard rail as they
steered through the turn.
“Brandon tried to get in the corner harder than I did. He was hoping it
would stick and he would be out in front of us,” said Jeffreys. “I
backed off and thought there was no way he was going to make this. I
just turned left and went under him.”
Jeffreys then led the rest of the way to claim the checkered – a
welcome change from the previous week when he was involved in a huge
pileup. “From where we were last week – underneath a car – to victory
lane, that’s all due to these guys working on the car,” said Jeffreys.
“We’ve improved the car here and there, and it’s seemed to get better.
We just finally had a good finish tonight.”
Defending champ Burt Myers of Walnut Cove started off the evening on a
disappointing note. After claiming the pole many times this season, he
qualified 10th on Saturday. He was able to make a few key moves to climb
up to an eighth place finish – which positioned him perfectly when the
“Madhouse Scramble” draw ended up placing him on the pole for the start
of the second race.
Myers shot out into the lead and sailed smoothly ahead to claim the
checkered. “Believer it or not, we tore up right much last week – so we
came over this morning to make sure the car was okay,” said Myers. “We
worked our butts off. We had a mishap qualifying. We did get lucky and
get the draw – but how can I call it luck when God’s in control?”
Not only did Myers receive a lucky draw, but his points rivals ended up
having bad nights. Tim Brown of Tobaccoville was involved in a wreck and
ended up finishing 13th in the second race.
Jonathan Brown of Winston-Salem was riding in fourth and looking to make
a strong showing in the points. But as he passed the lapped car of Jason
Myers, chaos ensued. Jason Myers made contact with the #22 of Jonathan
Brown, sending him spinning. Brown then retaliated by hitting Myers, and
the two started their own personal demolition derby in the north turn.
In the McDowell Heating & Air Sportsman Series, Tommy Neal of Walkertown
started on the outside and was able to motor ahead of pole starter Ross
Dalton of Liberty to take the lead. Neal then held off the outside row
challenges from John Holleman of Winston-Salem, Kyle Southern of Rural
Hall, Derek Stoltz of Walkertown, and Michael Adams of Yadkinville.
Tommy Neal went on to win the Colors Edge Sportsman 100, with Derek
Stoltz finishing second.
David Creed of Mount Airy claimed the checkered in the 20-lapper for the
law Offices of John Barrow Street Stock Series. In the Q104.1 Stadium
Stock Series, Chuck Wall and Justin Whitaker each brought home a win.
