Abbottstown, PA (August 22, 2020) – Dean’s Auto Plaza Night was action packed with four features and solid car counts across the three divisions, 410 Sprints, 358 Sprints and Mid Atlantic Modifieds.
Scott Fisher, who was one of three drivers racing in both the 410 and 358 divisions, started on the pole of the 30-lap feature. 2019 Rookie of the year, Trey Hivner lined up second.
Fisher led the field into turn 1 on the start with Jordan Givler moving into second. Givler used the top of the track to reel in Fisher and take the lead at the line on lap 2.
Chad Trout, who was running with a bruised elbow after taking a wild ride Friday night, got by Fisher for second on lap 3.
Danny Dietrich was picking off cars and got up to fourth from his ninth starting spot on lap 4.
Trout was closing in on Givler for second. Dietrich caught Fisher going down the back stretch on lap 5 to take third. Dietrich had his sight set on the leaders and was using the bottom line around the track to reel them in.
Trout continued to close in on Givler as Dietrich hunted them down. The top three, Givler, Trout and Dietrich, were under a blanket on lap 9. Dietrich got by Trout for second on lap 10 and made quick work of Givler taking the lead going into turn 3 on the same lap.
The fist caution of the race came on lap 11 when Hivner got spun around in turn 2. Hivner rejoined the field.
Dietrich paced the field ahead of Givler, Trout, Fisher and Landon Myers for the restart.
Trout took second coming out of turn 4 on the restart and Matt Campbell got by Givler to take third.
Dietrich’s 3.269 second lead over Trout was erased when the yellow flag came out on lap 16. Glenndon Forsythe and Brian Montieth got together on the front stretch. Forsythe rejoined the field but the eight-time track champion, Montieth headed to the pits ending his night.
Freddie Rahmer was on the move making his way to fifth on the restart and then fourth on lap 18.
As Dietrich approached lapped traffic with 10 laps to go, he had a 2.164 second advantage over Trout.
As the laps wound down a three car battle for fifth between Givler, Chase Dietz and Tim Glatfelter was well under way. Dietz hit the wall in turn 2 giving the spot back to Givler for a moment but Dietz rebounded and took the spot for good.
Rahmer continued to work his way towards the front of the field and got by Campbell for third with four laps to go. Campbell didn’t let Rahmer pull away and continued to challenge Freddie to take the spot back.
Dietrich won his third feature in a row and his fifth of the season 2.665 seconds ahead of Trout. Rahmer held on to finish third. Campbell crossed the line fourth and Dietz completed the top five.
410 heat winners were Scott Fisher, Chad Trout and Trey Hivner.
Tyler Ross Races to Victory in August 1 Make-up Feature
Of the 27 cars slated to start the 358 Sprint make-up feature from August 1, 25 cars made the call. CJ Tracy and John Sharpe were the two drivers that were not in attendance.
Alyson Dietz and Kenny Kuhn shared the front row for the first event of the night.
Dietz led the field into turn 1 for the 20-lap feature. Kuhn got his nose under Dietz in the corners, but Dietz held on to lead lap 1.
The first caution of the race came on lap 4 when Mark VanVorst came to a stop on the front stretch.
Wyatt Hinkle came to a stop during the caution and was towed off the front stretch as well.
Dietz led Steve Owings, Justin Foster, Kuhn and Tyler Ross to the cone for the restart.
Owings was all over Dietz for the lead when the caution came out for Jon Stewart who got turned around in turn 3 on lap 5. The caution quickly turned to red flag conditions when Kody Hartlaub rolled on his side in turn 2.
Kuhn who had been running fourth was also stopped in turn 2 with a flat tire.
Once again, the field lined up behind Dietz for the single file restart. Zachary Cool came to a stop on the back stretch as the field lined up for the restart bringing out the yellow flag. Billy Heltzel also came to a stop.
On the second attempt Owings used the bottom of 1 and 2 to get by Dietz for the lead. Brett Wanner got in to the top 5.
Owings entered lapped traffic on lap 9.
Tyler Ross dove under Dietz in turn 3 for second but it didn’t stick, and Dietz held the spot.
Heltzel brought out the caution on lap 10 when he stopped in turns 3 and 4.
Owings paced the field ahead of Dietz, Ross, Foster and Wanner for the restart.
Scott Fisher, Cody Fletcher and Todd Rittenhouse Jr. got stacked up in turn 4 on the restart bringing out another caution.
Ross got by Owings for the lead in turn 2 on lap 12. Ross maintained his advantage over Owings in lapped traffic and drove to his second win of the season.
Owings crossed the line second and Wanner finished third. Dietz was fourth and Brett Strickler completed the top five.
Chris Arnold Back in Victory Lane
Chris Arnold pulled double-duty on Saturday night, running both the 410 and 358 sprint car divisions. Arnold lined up sixth for the 20-lap feature and was searching for his first win since June 24, 2017.
Jon Stewart started on the pole with Alyson Dietz to his outside.
Stewart and Dietz were side by side going into turn 1 with Stewart getting the advantage and leading lap 1.
Arnold was up to third on lap 2 and challenged Dietz for second. Arnold took the position on lap 3. Arnold went straight to work tracking down Stewart for the lead. Chris slid Jon on lap 7 to take the top spot.
Jeff Rohrbaugh entered the top 5 on lap 7 and was working his way to the front of the field.
Arnold was pulling away and had a 1.5 second lead at the half-way point.
Mason Chaney did a 360 spin in turn 3 and kept going, but his acrobatics collected Rohrbaugh and Scott Fisher bringing out the caution on lap 13.
Arnold led Stewart, Dietz, Zane Rudisill and Steve Owings for the restart. Rudisill went to the top of turns 1 and 2 but couldn’t get by Dietz for third.
The caution came out on the restart for Matt Findley who stopped on the back stretch.
Rudisill tried the top again along with Owings but to no avail.
Tyler Ross, who won the first 358 feature of the night, made a big move getting to fourth but quickly fell off the pace bringing out the caution. The yellow turned to red when Wanner landed on his side in turn 2. Rudisill was also involved. Rudisill had been running fourth before Ross took the spot, Wanner was sixth on the last lap that was scored.
Owings used the top to get by Dietz for third, but the caution came out again when Wanner got turned around going into turn 1.
Once again Owings went to the top on the restart but this time, he couldn’t get by Dietz for third.
Brett Strickler running was running fifth and spun out in turn 2 bringing out the yellow on lap 16. Dylan Orwig and Jordan Strickler were also involved.
Owings got to third on the restart and made quick work of Stewart to take second. Stewart got into the back of Owings right before the flag stand bringing out yet another caution. Travis Scott was also collected.
Arnold led Owings, Dietz, Cody Fletcher and Justin Foster for the final restart of the race. Arnold started pulling away from the rest of the field and beat Owings to the checkered flag by 1.153 seconds. Dietz held on to finish third and Fletcher crossed the line fourth. Foster rounded out the top five.
358 Sprint heat winners were Tyler Ross, Travis Scott, Jon Stewart & Brett Wanner.
Michael Altobelli Jr. Wires the Field for Modified Win
Michael Altobelli Jr and Chris Arnold shared the front row of the 20-lap feature for the Mid Atlantic Modifieds. Altobelli drove to the when the green flag dropped with Arnold settling in second. Brandon Householder got by Dale Smith at the start for third.
Altobelli and Arnold started pulling away from the rest of the field as Kling went to work on Householder for third. Josh Hughes and Justin Cullum battled for fifth.
The caution flag flew on lap 7 for George Gutridge.
Altobelli paced the field for the restart ahead of Arnold, Householder, Kling and Hughes.
Cullum was looking to work his way into the top five, but Ray Kable had different plans. Kable was side by side for sixth with Cullum. Kable had the advantage going into turn 3 on lap 9 and made the pass at the line.
Cullum was still within striking distance until Kable raced his way to fourth.
Once again Altobelli and Arnold were pulling away from the rest of the field. Kable worked his way to third on lap 12.
Altobelli was being challenged by Arnold for the lead when the caution came out on lap 13 for Joey Polevoy who stopped in turn 2.
Kable stayed with the leaders on the restart, but the caution came out before he could make anything happen.
A pile-up of five cars in turn 2 was the cause of the yellow flag. Haley Kaiser, Alyssa Rowe, Chase Butler, Jason Saga and Chris Cogan were involved.
Kable challenged Arnold for second with five laps to go. Cullum made his way into the top five on lap 17.
The final caution of the race came with two laps to go when Doug Ostwald and Jason Saga spun around in turns 3 and 4.
The field lined up behind Altobelli for a green, white, checkered finish.
Kable was closing in on Arnold when the white flag flew but couldn’t make the pass.
Altobelli crossed the line head of Arnold, Kable, Brad Kling and Cullum.
Mid Atlantic Modified heat winners were Chris Arnold, Michael Altobelli Jr. and Dale Smith.
