RAIN STOPS WALL STADIUM OPENER AFTER

THREE FEATURES COMPLETED

WALL TOWNSHIP, N.J. ~ For the second straight Saturday night rain stopped Wall Stadium Speedway’s attempt to complete Opening Night 2014 stock car racing action. This time, qualifying and three main events were completed before wet weather and eventual thunder and lightning stopped the 40-lap main event for the Downs Ford Modifieds on the 17th lap. The final 23 laps of the Modified main event will be completed this Saturday night (May 10) along with the regularly scheduled racing program. The rain postponed Factory Stock main will be made up on July 19 and the 4 Cylinder race will be run on May 17.

Before the wet weather arrived Rob Hyer of South Amboy took the opening night win in the Sportsman 30-lap feature. Brick’s Robert Sutphin paced this race in the early going but was constantly taunted by Hyer. The “Hyer Flyer” made a daring move to take the lead near halfway and was then chased by Howell’s Kevin Davison and Holmdel’s Andrew Krause to the finish line. Sutphin and Ken Matlach of Levittown, NY wrapped up the top five.

Mike Alcaro and Howell’s Robert French were the stars of the 25-lap Legend Cars main event as they battled for the win from start to finish. Despite tight racing and sparks flying Alcaro held on for the opening night win with French a tight second. Brian Spencer of Edison, Dan Roslin and Bob Baltera of Flemington were third through fifth.

Defending champion Brian Doyle of Ronkonkoma, NY continued his winning ways taking top honors in the 25 lap Limited Late Model feature. Although the race was stopped as crews completed guardrail repairs for a turn two crash involving Jackson’s Glen Conk and Michelle Moormann of Beachwood who were not injured, Doyle led most of the way. He was chased the entire distance by former champion Howie Conk of Jackson. Bayville’s Mike Tillett, Nick Shaw of Chatham and Dom Casola of Holmdel wrapped up the top five.

Howell’s Eric Mauriello and New Egypt’s Jason Hearne struggled for the lead early in the Downs Ford Modified feature before Mauriello took the lead with Holmdel’s Andrew Krause and Freehold’s Chas Okerson fighting close behind. Rain then stopped this race cold on lap 17 and it will be finished this Saturday night.

Stock car racing returns to Wall Stadium this Saturday night May 10 with the Downs Ford Modifieds, Sportsman cars, Factory Stocks, Limited Late Models, Legend Cars and a special Powder Puff race for the ladies, along with the final 23 laps of the May 3 rain postponed Downs Ford Modified race, all on the Mother’s Day weekend Saturday night schedule. John Gasko of Gasko Farms will be on hand to present all moms a flower.

On Saturday pit gates will open at 2:00 p.m., with the regular afternoon practice session beginning at 3:00 p.m. and running until 5:00 p.m. Spectator seating will open at 5:00 p.m. Qualifying is set for 6:00 p.m. with main event action to follow.

Action will then continue on Sunday (May 11) as Wall Stadium presents the “Sunday Small-Car Series” starting at 11:00 a.m.

Wall Stadium presents professional motorsports events on most Saturdays and Sundays during the summer months.
