COLSTEN HOLDS OFF THORNTON FOR PENN CAN MODIFIED WIN… B.MADY, WOLF, MABY, BEACH, and ROBINSON ALSO WIN

Susquehanna, PA…The great racing action returned to Penn Can Speedway Friday on Waymart Building Center Multiple Sclerosis Awareness Night. Joey Colsten of Binghamton, New York beat Billy Thornton of Old Forge, Pennsylvania to the finish line in another photo finish to win his first feature event of the 2014 season. The 602 sportsman also had another close finish with Brian Mady holding off Ryan Olsommer and Alec Gennarelli for his second sportsman win of his rookie season. Shane Wolf Jr has been good all season in the street stocks and put his mount in victory lane for the third time in 2014. Eric Beach, Mike Robinson, and Kamdin Maby were also winners Friday.

Coming into Friday night’s racing program Joey Colsten had been struggling to find a set up on his race car that worked at the three eighths mile Penn Can Speedway. After a great qualifying run, Colsten was set for the thirty lap modified feature. Colsen would jump out to an early lead followed closely by Bobby Trapper, Ken Titus, and Mike Nagel Jr. A lap five caution for a front stretch tangle regrouped the field with Colsten now leading Nagel, Brian Malcolm, and Adam MacGeorge. With the green back out racing for position was happening all through the field. Colsten had his hands full holding off Nagel while the cars of Bill Thornton and Kevin Hartnett started to make their way through the field during a long green flag run to the checker. At the halfway point in the race Colsten led Nagel, MacGeorge, and Thornton. Lap after lap Thornton’s car seemed to be getting stronger. With five laps remaining Thornton moved to the second spot and took off after the leader. Moving in and out of lapped traffic Thornton pulled to the bumper of Colsten as the two cars took the white flag. As the two moved out of turn four Thornton went high with his momentum trying to make the last lap pass. The two came to the checkered flag with Colsten edging Thornton by the slimmest of margins. Nagel stayed strong for third followed by Malcolm, and Hartnett. MacGeorge, Dan Pompey, Nick Rochinski, Tom McGurrin, and Alan Rudalavage rounded out the top ten.

Brian Mady in his first season behind the wheel of a 602 sportsman has learned quickly. Friday night he took the lead early in the twenty lap feature ahead of the strong running cars Todd Titus, Alec Gennarelli, and Ryan Olsommer. Lap after lap Mady kept his car out front with the battle for second changing after each completed circuit. The first and only caution of the race came out on lap twelve for a three car incident on the home stretch eliminating the strong running cars of Paul Rooney and Dusty Barton. When the race resumed Mady had Olsommer and Gennarelli on his tail. As the laps were winding down, Olsommer made his move on the outside trying to get by the leader. Mady held on and beat Olsommer to the flag for his second win of the year.

Shane Wolf Jr has had a fast car all season. Friday Wolf would find Victory Lane holding off a bunch of strong competitors. Wolf came from his fourth starting position and took the early lead. Steve Deinhardt, Butch Green, Randy Fox, and Ryan Stone would all battle race long trying to catch Wolf. At the flag Wolf would hold off the challenges for the win followed by Deinhardt, Green, Fox, and Ray Lindquist.

The Xcel 600 modifieds returned after last week off and local favorite Kamdin Maby picked up his third win of the season at the speedway over Will Eastman, Tim Frantz, Nick Cinquati, Kailee Dimorier, and Scott Adams.

Eric Beach continued to be hot in the factory stocks while Mike Robinson was the winner in the four cylinders.

PENN NOTES: Waymart Building Center sponsored the Multiple Sclerosis Awareness Night at the track. The speedway donated all proceeds from the 50/50 raffle to the MS Society. Chuck Grimm, Waymart Building Center owner, doubled the 50/50 donation to the MS Society making the total raised over $700. Next Friday is the annual Kiddie Ride Night at the speedway.
