——————————————————————————————————————————————VONDOHREN, FLEMING AND KRESSLEY FIND VICTORY LANE IN NASCAR STOCK CAR RACING EVENTS AT GRANDVIEW SPEEDWAY ON SATURDAY NIGHT
Bechtelsville, PA April 25, 2015 . . . Multi-time champion Craig Von Dohren became the third different 30-lap NASCAR Whelen All-American Racing Series Modified feature winner in four outings on Saturday night at Grandview Speedway when he collected his first win of the season and 91st career victory at the 1/3-mile oval. Von Dohren battled race leader Ryan Grim for several laps before the pair made contact going into the second turn. Von Dohren got underneath Grim to merge into first on the 27th lap – the same lap current point leader Duane Howard advanced to second. Howard tried his best to get past Von Dohren, but fell short as Von Dohren pulled the Beartown Recycling/K.L. Harring Transportation No. 1C into the winner’s circle.
Kory Fleming, who was sidelined from Late Model action last week by a drive shaft issue in the heat, bounced back and scored his first win of the year. In the 25-lap NASCAR BRC Late Model Feature Fleming ended his winless drought being shut out since September 10, 2011. The N.J.-based driver said, “He didn’t know when he was going to win again and the car kind of drove itself he was just along for the ride.”
In NASCAR Sportsman competition Brett Kressley continued his dominance of the division and won his third 25-lap feature out of four.
The T.P. Trailers, Limerick monetary awards went to Von Dohren, $250 modifieds; and Fleming and Kressley both received $100 as their respective feature winners. Von Dohren also received $150 in product awards from VP Fuels for running gas. The Dan’s Deli ½-way Hoagie leaders were Grim, modifieds; Fleming, late models and Arnold, sportsman. Bill Henning, Jared Umbenhauer and Brett Gilmore were the recipients of the Cargo Trailers certificates.
Ingersoll Rand Tools Night is set for Grandview Speedway on Saturday. May 2nd, at 7:30 p.m., the new starting time. Featured will be the NASCAR 358 Modifieds, BRC Late Models and Sportsman stock cars. Each feature winner will receive Ingersoll Rand products valued up to $600 along with the T.P.Trailers bonus bucks and VP Racing Fuels product awards. A fan will have a chance to win an IR Power Tools bag along with two tickets for a future Grandview event by participating, starting May 2nd in the Text to Win contest. One winner is chosen each week, from May through August, from those who text “IRToolsGRV” to 313131. Fans should plan to participate each week.
Modified action saw Ryan Grim, sidelined by an opening night crash, keep his self-owned/sponsored Hoffman Speed Supplies/Willow St. Pub No. 17, in front from his pole starting position trailed by Kevin Hirthler, Kyle Borror, running his back-up car after his opening night flip;, Ron Haring Jr. and Brian Houseknecht.
A seven-car homestretch accident eliminated Ray Swinehart, Tim Buckwalter and Jarrad Miller to bring out the red with one lap completed. On the restart Kevin Hirthler put the Green Lane/Wm. Penn/4-Star Lettering No. 117 into the lead, but Grim stuck with him trying to regain control.
A third lap first and second turn spin involving Mike Kellner, Jamie Speers and Meme DeSantis brought out the yellow. This restart Hirthler had a push coming off the fourth turn and Grim dove underneath him to regain the top spot.
In a matter of laps Grim had some distance built up between himself and second through fifth-place runners Hirthler, Glenn Strunk, Don Norris Jr. and Borror. Coming on strong behind them were Kevin Hartnett, Von Dohren and Howard.
Norris Jr., who previously moved into third, continued to be plagued by misfortunes when front end suspension problems brought him to a stop in the fourth turn for the final caution on lap 15. Grim maintained his position, but now putting in their bids for first were Hirthler, Von Dohren, Howard and Borror. Trying to break into the top five after being involved in the second lap red was Jeff Strunk and by the 16th lap he was fifth.
Von Dohren cleared Hirthler for second on the 19th lap and set sail after Grim.
Lapped cars came into play with five laps to go and a blanket could have been put over the top five comprised of Grim, Von Dohren, Howard, Strunk and Hirthler.
Von Dohren and Grim made contact coming off turn two with Von Dohren now first and Howard second while Grim fell to third on lap 27.
Von Dohren kept everyone behind and went on to score the win with Howard a close second followed by Grim, Strunk and Hirthler. Rounding out the top ten were Kyle Weiss, Doug Manmiller, Borror, G. Strunk and rookie Jared Umbenhauer.
Grim, Hirthler and Weiss won the heats. The consi went to Billy Pauch Jr. making a rare appearance at Grandview.
Polesitter Bill Henning took control of the Late Model feature on the initial green with Fleming and Lou Egrie Jr. right on his bumper.
Henning held on to first until Fleming got by him on the eighth lap. At the same time veteran campaigner Rick Todorow and Sean Merkel followed through for second and third.
Sean Merkel got past Todorow on the 12th lap to attempt to unseat Fleming who had a healthy lead built up.
Cory Merkel hit the third turn infield marker tire sending it onto the track bringing out the caution on the 17th lap. Henning, left with nowhere to go, hit the outside wall. It was still Fleming at the head of the pack when action resumed.
No one was able to take the lead away from Fleming even though Merkel made several runs on him and as the checkered unfurled Fleming was triumphant followed by Merkel, Todorow, for his season best finish; Chuck Schutz, coming from dead last and Dan Green. Wayne Pfeil, Dave Ogin, Cory Merkel, Steve Wilson and Henning completed the top ten.
Heat winners were Henning and Green.
Defending champion Randy Stoudt, coming off of a brief retirement, didn’t fare too well on his return when the engine blew in warm-ups forcing him out of competition.
For the second week in a row Kressley took the lead away from Brad Arnold and went on to take the checkered in the Sportsman feature.
Arnold wasted no time at the drop of the green and went from third to first ahead of Dave Dissinger, Brandon Whitmoyer, Ken Eckert Jr. and Dean Bachman.
Dissinger slowed his pace in the fourth turn for the eighth lap caution. Arnold was still the pacesetter on the restart, but now Kressley was second putting pressure on him.
Kressley became the new leader on the tenth lap, but Arnold stayed right with him trying to pass him.
Two laps later they swapped the lead and Arnold was in front.
The final yellow was on the 15th lap when Sean Weiss spun in the fourth turn almost in front of the pack. Kressley put the Kressley Auto & Truck Sales No. 19K into the lead when action resumed.
It didn’t take Kressley long to pull away leaving Arnold, Eckert Jr., Jim Housworth and Joe Funk III dice for spots.
Kressley never looked back and crossed the finish line first followed by Arnold. Eckert Jr. and Housworth were next for their season best finishes with Funk III completing the top five. Sixth through tenth were Brandon Whitmoyer, Ryan Beltz, Jordan Henn, Craig Whitmoyer and Brett Gilmore.
Dissinger, Erik Renninger and Brandon Whitmoyer won the heats. The consi was won by Brett Gilmore.
